Job Description

Job Objective:  Responsible for keeping buildings and grounds clean and in an orderly condition.

Must have the following credentials and qualifications to be a custodian at the Allen East Local School District:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong work ethic
  • Demonstrates a positive pattern of attendance
  • Must pass criminal background check (BCI and FBI)
  • Employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace during time of employment
  • Meets all mandated health requirements
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:   The following are typical duties and responsibilities representative of performance and expectations.  A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions:

  • Is able to take directives from immediate supervisor and perform tasks assigned
  • Promotes a favorable image of the school district while advancing the district’s professional image
  • Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures
  • Can work as a team and independently, has the capability to complete assigned tasks and move on to tasks that need to be completed that are not assigned
  • Open and close building daily
  • Check water, heat, and electrical in all rooms and restrooms daily; notify the maintenance supervisor immediately if a condition exists that would interfere with school operating
  • Keep snow cleared from sidewalks and doorways
  • Inspect parking lot and grounds for debris and clean it up
  • Perform cleaning tasks as assigned by the maintenance supervisor
  • Check security of the building at the end of each day, close windows, doors, etc.
  • Such other duties as assigned by the administration and/or maintenance supervisor

Workplace Considerations: To promote safety, employees are expected to exercise caution and comply with safety regulations and district policies/procedures when involved in the following situations/conditions.  Exposure to the following situations may range from remote to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.

  • Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases
  • Potential for interaction with disruptive and/or unruly individuals
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions and seasonal temperature extremes
  • Duties may require operating and/or riding in a vehicle
  • Duties may require the operation of work related equipment (plow, tractor, mower, scrubber, buffer, etc.)
  • Occasional evening/weekend work
  • Occasional repetitive hand motion. e.g. use of hand tools
  • Occasional requirement to work in high places
  • Must be able to function effectively, both inside and outside, in work that is primarily of an active nature
  • Duties may require exposure to cleaning solvents, air borne particulars, and odors
  • Duties may require wearing protective clothing and using safety equipment
  • Exposure to wet floors, vapors, and odors
  • Duties may require lifting, carrying, and moving work-related supplies/equipment
  • Duties may require climbing, bending, reaching, and kneeling
  • Duties will take place primarily onsite within the building or grounds, occasional trips offsite may be required at the discretion of the maintenance supervisor

  • Evaluation will be according to Allen East Local School’s policy provisions and contractual agreements.
