Overview




The Research Scientist/Lab Manager is responsible for managing research lab operations associated with the day-to-day management of the lab in close consultation with the PI. She/He is responsible for personnel and resource management of the lab and must ensure that all operations related to the implementation and execution of all studies conducted by staff, are performed in accordance with IRB, local and Federal Regulations. This position works with investigators and the Director on executing existing studies, developing new research projects, collaborating on funding application, protocol management, and other tasks. Applicants should have several years of laboratory experience with a background Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, Genetics, Developmental Neuroscience or similar fields. Experience in mouse genetics, bioinformatics, stem cells/ organoids, molecular biology and/or embryology are preferred. Additional experience with Genomics/Bioinformatics/Statistics is a plus. Our vision aims to rapidly translate research discoveries into lasting treatment options for pediatric patients afflicted with genetics variants leading to congenital malformations of the forebrain and/or craniofacial tissues. We use sequencing analysis as well as a range of molecular embryological tools, including genome editing in animal models and in vitro studies. These models also serve as a platform to explore the pathogenicity of candidate variants, explore underlying mechanism(s) and potentially test novel therapeutic agents. The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and capable of working with technical staff to drive the projects forward. The candidate must be able to verbally and visually communicate clearly to all level of stakeholders.


Responsibilities




Experimental Design

Participate in requirement gathering, conduct literature review, draft proposal, and evaluate scientific merit.
Literature based research
 Technical command of needed technologies
Conducting experiments, design of appropriate controls
 Devising analytical approach as a means to specify data acquisition

Data Analysis & Interpretation

Records and analyzes data generated by the research study, and helps to plan future research endeavors.
Parse data collected from experiments into a suitable and controlled data analysis
Interpret results of analysis in a biological framework
 Design next steps experimentally based on previous results

Data Communication

Parse results into a suitable format for presentation that is intuitive and representative
Develop writing skills for manuscript and grant writing
Present the results internally and externally in forms of presentations, posters, or manuscripts
 Prepares scientific and technical papers from the results of the research work.
Publishes papers in appropriate refereed scientific journals.
Presents findings at local (particularly CRI research meetings) and national research forums.

Manager Responsibilities

Manages all human and physical resources associated with the research lab
Responsible for ensuring that the lab is FDA and IRB compliant; maintains, updates, and implements guidelines and procedures; (directs and conducts training of all staff).
 Oversees communication with staff and investigators on study progress, procedures and processes; Responsible for planning and scheduling workload and staff levels to successfully complete projects.
Maintains competency with regards to changes in regulations and developments in translational research, both internally and externally.

Other Responsibilities

Document experiment plans especially scientific direction and outputs with time estimates.
Work both independently and in small teams to develop scientific/analytic approaches.
 Work with both clinical and research data while keeping PHI exposure to a need-only basis.
Share knowledge and be a good team player.
Performs other duties as assigned by manager.


Qualifications




Several years of laboratory experience.
B.S./B.A. in relevant field, M.S. or Ph.D. (or similar experience) preferred
Previous publication track record preferred
 Previous grant proposal writing experience highly desired
Strong desire to learn and highly collaborative
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with all levels of the organization and external contacts.

Pressure in this position will vary depending on the workload. The workload will be heavy but manageable most of the time. Pressure may arise in the face of deadlines associated with grants and projects.
