The Legal Advocate is responsible for providing an array of services for shelter residents and community clients of the LSS CHOICES Domestic Violence Shelter in Columbus, OH. Duties includecourt accompaniment, crisis intervention and stabilization; and referral and linkage. The Legal advocate is to maintain professional standards in his/her conduct; to stimulate cooperative and coordinated services delivery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide crisis intervention and stabilization services to shelter residents and community clients with domestic violence issues.
Provide temporary crisis assistance around legal needs and rights of clients.
Assess client's emotional and physical needs.
Offer court accompaniment as needed for any proceeding, including criminal case, TPO and CPO hearings, divorce and custody hearings.
Assists victims prior to court hearing to offer support throughout legal process.
Acts as advocate between domestic violence victims and the legal process.
Refer client to appropriate agencies for ongoing services.
Provide advocacy and support for clients through ongoing contact.
Provides thorough documentation on all client related data.
Interview victims with awareness and sensitivity to trauma experienced.
Educates victims regarding safety planning and other community resources.
Provides services in the shelter, including Crisis Office and telephone coverage as assigned
Provide feedback to supervisor for Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) as necessary
Attend and contribute to all appropriate staff meetings.
Educate staff and volunteers regarding legal issues related to domestic violence
All other duties as assigned
Bachelor degree in social work or related field preferred or equivalent experience required. LSW preferred.
Experience with Crisis Intervention, legal experience;
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of DV, community resources and ability to engage clients experiencing trauma
Sensitivity to the needs of agency clients and ability to maintain confidentiality
Strong oral and written skills
Knowledge of human service delivery systems and systems advocacy
Ability to work independently and as part of team to deliver services
Knowledge of basic computer skills
Valid Ohio driver's license, access to reliable insured transportation and ability to meet LSS insurance standards required
Seeing: read reports and use computer
Speaking & Hearing: communication with clients and co-workers
