This is a 36 hour per week, benefits eligible position. Holidays, weekend, and on-call required. Flex shifts

Provide direct patient care and assistance under the supervision of a Transport Clinician or physician using Family Centered Care principals. Provides stabilization and emergency care of the acutely ill neonate, infant, child, adolescent, or adult by ALS and Critical Care levels of transport via ground and air. Educates referral staff through informal teaching as well as planned educational conferences. Demonstrates competence defined in transport paramedic responsibilities in providing age-appropriate care and service to patients from the age of birth to 21 years, and selected adults.

1. Assumes the defined responsibilities and functions of a Transport Technician under the supervision of a Transport Clinician or physician.

  a. Collaborates with other team members in the management of the acutely ill patient.

  b. Demonstrates leadership ability; accepts responsibility and accountability for all decisions and actions.

  c. Demonstrates rapid decision-making skills and the ability to use sound judgment.

2. Assists with the planning of the transport team activities in accordance with established written guidelines, policies, and procedures.

3. In conjunction with the Physician Consult Transfer Center (PCTC) and NCH Dispatch; organizes rapid transport mobilization and assures appropriate utilization of resources.

4. Performs and properly documents physical observations, obtains and records medical-family history, assists in formulating a clinical problem list and plans care to meet all patient / family needs.

5. Using evidence based practice to improve care; stabilizes the patient in the referring center through assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of care by protocol or under the supervision of a Transport Clinician or physician.

6. Performs treatments and procedures in accordance with the written guidelines and policies of the Transport Program within the framework of the protocols, policies, procedures, and standards set forth by Nationwide Children's and the Division of Patient Care Services. With documented training, competently performs stabilization and resuscitation of the critically ill patient under the supervision of the Transport Clinician or physician utilizing the following interventions and specialized procedures dependent on which Level of training:

Level 1 Transport Technician Role

  a. Cervical collar and spinal stabilization

  b. Splints suspected or actual fractures including the use of traction splints

  c. Orthopedic dressing-clavicle strap, cervical collars, slings, ACE wraps, Schantz dressing, knee immobilizer

  d. Administers oxygen therapy

  e. Positions/Holds for procedures

  f. Performs oral and NP suctioning

  g. Cleans wounds and applies dressing

  h. Performs phlebotomy and venipuncture

  i. Initiates peripheral intravenous therapy in accordance with NCH and Transport Policy/procedure

  j. Operates IV pump and/or manually regulates infusions

  k. Performs life support measures per protocol

  l. Endotracheal intubation

  m. Needle thoracotomy

  n. Mechanical Ventilation 16 years of age and over

  o. Intraosseous access

Level 2 of Transport Tech Role

  a. Mechanical ventilation under 16 years of age

  b. Peripheral arterial puncture

  c. High frequency ventilation

  d. Provides iNO gas for inhalation

  e. Umbilical Vessel Catheterization

7. Provides continuous monitoring of the patient per protocol during transport.

8. Administers medication under the supervision of the Transport Clinician or physician, in accordance with the policies and procedures of Nationwide Children?s and in accordance with the written protocols, guidelines, policies, and procedures for administration of medications on transport.

9. Maintains documentation of patient assessment, condition, interventions required, and communication processes on the transport record.1

10. Providing Family Centered Care, crisis intervention, support, and education to the family of the critically ill patient.

11. Maintains fleet, equipment, and supplies necessary to the transport system including routine maintenance and cleaning.

12. Functions as a resource to referral staff, Nationwide Children's staff, and the community.

13. Identifies referral hospital education needs and helps to meet these education needs through informal and/or formal teaching.

14. Identifies system problems for research and assists in research activities of the transport program.

15. Continually evaluates methods of practice; recommends changes, and modifications of protocols to meet patient needs.

16. Actively participates in the unit committees and projects to assure daily operation and growth of the Transport Program.

17. Establishes professional objectives, evaluates self and peers, and shares progress with the Transport Program Manager.

18. Attends and actively participates in monthly staff meetings.

19. Attends and actively participates in hospital based committees and projects.

20. Successfully completes quarterly skills and recertification requirements.

21. Certification required: BLS, NRP, PALS, ACLS, and trauma course prior to completion of orientation.

22. Successful completion of NCH Critical Care drug test and IV Opioid, Hypnotic, Sedative, and Anticonvulsant test prior to completion of orientation.

23. Attends educational opportunities designed for/or relevant to transport personnel.

24. Actively pursues own professional growth through attendance at conferences, educational activities, and through continual review and sharing of professional experiences.

25. Must obtain advanced certification within one year of completing orientation that is specific to the program?s patient population and maintain.

26. Functions as a team member performing other related duties as assigned.

27. Supports the Mission, Vision, Values of the hospital and the Transport Program.

28. Assists with orientation of new Transport Team personnel30. Drive the MICU safely to and from transport locations.



1. High school graduate or equivalent with good verbal and written communication skills and basic computer knowledge.

2. Current Ohio Driver's license.

3. Must pass motor vehicle background inspection, insurance eligibility, driving qualifications, and training set forth by Nationwide Children's Hospital and maintain qualification of insurance guidelines.

4. Certified by the State of Ohio as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic.

5. Successful completion of the 2 stages of Transport Paramedic Training Program and Preceptorship.

  a. Driving and ALS Transports (Level 1)

  b. Critical Care Transports (Level 2)i. Must meet all the Level 1 Transport requirements.

6. Experience requirements for applicants:

  a. Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic with 2 years of experience in a pediatric emergency department preferred.

  b. While orienting to Driving and ALS Transports, one will need to maintain an FTE of 0.6 during orientation and maintain for at least one year after orientation is complete.

  c. Once orienting to Critical Care Transport stage (Level 2), one will need to maintain an FTE of 0.9 during orientation and maintain for at least one year after orientation is complete.

  d. Stipulations of various hours in multiple departments dependent on previous experience to include: emergency department, PICU, and NICU at Nationwide Children?s Hospital is required during the transport preceptorship for applicants.

  e. Orientation between the two levels of care could be up to or over 1 year.

7. Demonstrates self-motivation, sensitivity, leadership, interpersonal skills, teaching ability, organization, and advanced level of critical thinking and decision making.

8. Demonstrates ability to work under stress using sound judgment.

9. On call hours required

10. Must meet and maintain role of MICU Driver/Paramedic.


1. Adheres to flight/safety requirements of the Transport Program and all service providers.

2. Must be able to lift up to 165lbs. and pull/push 300 lb. isolette with assistance.

3. Must be able to see, hear, stand, walk, read, and perform manual task with or without accommodation; and care for oneself with little or no difficulty.

4. Must be able to move or reposition patients of any weight or size with assistance of another person(s) and or equipment.

5. Must not exceed body weight with full uniform greater than 230 pounds (flight regulations) for Level 2 Critical Care Transport.

6. Must pass physical for MICU Driver and yearly health evaluations

7. Must have 10 hours off from other positions prior to shift.8. Must pass a Fit for Duty Test upon hire, annually, and before returning to work from a leave of absence or FMLA.
