Job Description

Senior Engineer, Operations Technology - Steel Producing

As a Senior Engineer, Operations Technology at Cleveland-Cliffs Cleveland Works, you can expect to see your work everywhere; the steels you work with every day are used in building nations. Ideal candidates enjoy hands-on, challenging, family-like environments and are looking for opportunities to develop further in their career.

The Engineer - Operations Technology is responsible for the successful implementation of process improvement initiatives which directly result in a safer work environment, improved productivity, enhanced quality, and/or reduced costs.

This is a hands-on, "in the shop" type of position requiring a comprehensive knowledge of a Steel Plant Industrial Operating Facility, and a comfort with the shop floor environment.

Some of the main duties and responsibilities include:

Ongoing review of current standard operating procedures in each area of the process. Maintain contacts within the company and broader industry to allow best practice implementation relative to these procedures. Facilitate changes to standard operating procedures as needed and conduct training to ensure understanding and successful implementation of any enhanced procedures

Work on various continuous improvement processes and projects for overall process improvement (eg. increased productivity, improved yields, lower refractory costs, etc.).  Also, develop and maintain Performance Improvement Action Plans related to continuous process improvement and tracking of management gains

Lead and/or participate in the implementation of daily management Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) and assist in achieving those targets. Track and benchmark performance of other facilities steel shops using available data

Provide technical support and assist in developing the scope and evaluating potential solutions for proposed and approved capital projects in Steel Producing

Prepare or coordinate the preparation of reports, as well as the gathering and analysis of data, to support assigned projects

Supervise the development and administration of technical training classes for the hourly and salaried workforce as needed / requested by the operations

Support the environmental, safety, and quality management systems as needed

Assist R&D in the development and testing of new systems and models.  Maintain models after their implementation

Participate in, present at, and lead (as necessary) Steelmaking / Casting technology meetings, and roundtables

Support major shop outages and start-ups as necessary

Assist in troubleshooting process performance and conformity issues within the Steel Producing Division

Note:  Some shift work and/or weekend work may be required on an ad hoc basis.

While the area of influence and control of an Engineer - Operations Technology could be anywhere in the Cleveland Facility, the primary focus of this position is Steel Producing Operations (including treatment of Hot Metal, charging, blowing, and tapping of the BOF, operations of the ladle furnance/VCP, selection and maintenance of refractories, and continuous casting practices and operations).

This position will report directly to the Division Manager - Operations Technology, while maintaining a close relationship with and functional level coordination with the Steel Producing Operations Management. The individual will work with the bargaining unit crews and supervision to implement and evaluate operating strategies.  They will also look at the execution of operating practices and evaluate their impact on the process.  The Operation Technology Engineer requires a high level of initiative, curiosity, and persistence for the successful fulfillment of these tasks.  This position also requires a willingness to work "on the floor" in an Industrial Steel Plant environment.
