About the Department

The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program is one of the Federal TRIO Programs designed to assist undergraduate students that are first-generation college students, who are Pell-eligible and/or members of an under-represented ethnic group in the quest to obtain a graduate degree, ultimately the PhD.

This program assists undergraduate students in preparation for Graduate Studies through various scholarly activities. Students apply who would like to receive financial support for conducting research and who would like to work one on one with a faculty mentor and members of program staff.

Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati (UC) invites applications to apply for an Assistant Director, Academic position for the TRIO - McNair Scholars Program. This is a full-time position; the Assistant Director will coordinate and supervise all individualized services and project events designed to provide graduate/professional school preparation and individual assistance to participants and assists the Associate Director in implementing designated areas of program administration. This program collaborates with UC/TRIO program staff, the UC Office of Undergraduate Research, and University faculty partners. One aspect of this role is as an academic advisor and has a strong interest in research and scholarship. Candidates with a demonstrated awareness of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is highly valued. This is a grant-funded position.

Essential Functions

Disseminates application materials to prospects and assists Associate Director to identify ad select eligible scholars.
Coordinates initial need assessments provides academic advising and support, academic counseling, arranges tutoring & referrals; assists scholars with personal statement and CV's.
Assists scholars to prepare Research and Professional Portfolio materials and assists Associate Director.
Schedule and coordinate graduate school visits, attendance at McNair & other conference and cultural events.
Orchestrates information meetings, participates in McNair Seminar class and Summer Research Seminar.
Assists scholars to secure off-campus research or internship slots & graduate admission.
Plans major events (Poster, major speakers, grad panels, faculty mentoring panels, graduate mentoring program, graduation & recognition event).
Coordinates with campus programs promoting undergraduate research and post-baccalaureate study.
Networks with state and regional McNair Staff; joins in state and regional conferences.
Weekend and evening work will occasionally be required.
Must be able to travel and drive university and rented vehicles.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree with five(5) years experience; -OR-Associate's degree with seven (7) years experience; -OR-nine (9) years experience. Degree must be in a related field; experience must be related.
Experience also requires at least three (3) years supervision.

Additional Qualifications Considered

Master's Degree in student affairs, social work, counseling, higher education, or a similar field.
Minimum three years' experience in higher education administration, academic and/or counseling capacity, program design, project management, strategic planning, and evaluation at the college level.
Demonstrated understanding and commitment to first-generation students, and/or students from historically underrepresented groups in higher education and a demonstrated ability to effectively advise and advocate for those students from the target population in a college setting.
Knowledge of TRIO or other higher education academic programs and support services and effective practices supporting student recruitment, retention, and development.
Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice in higher education.
Experience in financial aid counseling and academic advising.
