Job Title: Dog Warden or Dog Warden/Humane Agent
Department: Ashtabula County Board of Commissioners
Immediate Supervisor: Ashtabula County Administrator
Hours: Monday – Friday 11:00 A.M. to 7:30 P.M. with after hours on-call rotations
Pay Grade/Rate of Pay:
• Dog Warden Pay Grade 9: $46,661.47 to $48,994.54 annually.
• Dog Warden/Humane Agent Pay Grade 10: $50,175.01 to $52,683.76 annually.
Compensation within the starting range (based on 5% above base) will be determined based on qualifications, experience, and certifications. Additional compensation of $1.25/hour for EBI certification. Plus, a comprehensive benefit package.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Patrols the County and enforces statutes governing dog licensing, control, and regulation, including responding to dog-at-large complaints, conducting license checks, issuing warnings and citations, seizing and impounding dogs, and investigating nuisance or dangerous dog concerns impacting public health, safety, and welfare. Investigates dog bite incidents in coordination with the local health department and livestock damage claims involving dogs. Appears in court as required. Receives and responds to public complaints; prepares and maintains reports, records, and related documentation. Coordinates with local organizations regarding stray and impounded dogs and assists the Auditor’s Office with dog licensing processes. Position requires participation in an after-hours on-call rotation. Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Completion of secondary education or equivalent and two (2) years or more training and/or experience working with animals, animal control, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Position requires the ability to safely handle and restrain animals, lift and transport equipment or animals as necessary, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and respond to potentially hazardous situations. May involve exposure to aggressive animals, outdoor weather conditions and emotionally difficult situations.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and maintain insurability under the County’s vehicle insurance policy. Additional compensation may be available for candidates who possess current certifications relevant to the position, including but not limited to EBI Euthanasia Certification. Compensation consideration will be based on the type of certification(s) held, and operational needs of the Department.
Final candidate must successfully complete a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and criminal background check, including BCI fingerprints, as a condition of employment.
