Head Mechanic

8hrs/day

12mos/year

• Five years experience as a mechanic on buses or large trucks preferred.
• Responsible to Superintendent and/or designee.
• Ability and initiative to make "on the spot" decisions related to any emergency that may arise.
• Leadership abilities and ability to effectively work out problems with bus drivers and other employees.
• Ability to work with Route and Bus Driver Supervisor, bus drivers, administrators, other school employees, and the general public.
• To have and maintain a current C.D.L. license with school bus and passenger endorsement, as well as Ohio certification pre-service.
• Employee to attend training.

Duties:

Mechanical

• Tune-ups
• Air brake systems
• Replace broken springs, axles, kingpins, exhaust systems, and bearings
• Rebuild manual transmissions
• Engine overhauls, electrical, steering, grease, oil changes, mount/dismount tires
• Preventive maintenance
• Automatic transmission experience

Prepare buses for annual Ohio State inspection

Diagnose of engine and drive train problems

Diagnose and repair disabled buses

*Assist and advise as to road conditions on potential inclement weather days

Keep detailed records of maintenance work for each bus and school vehicles

*Prepare specifications for chassis and body bids

Advise and in-service drivers on proper operation of buses

*Keep accurate and updated inventories of parts and supplies

*Order and do necessary paperwork on parts and outside service

Bodywork (all phases) including welding and fabrication

Any other related jobs as designated by Director of Transportation to insure safe school bus operation

Other duties as assigned by Director of Transportation

Collect bus work forms from drivers and prioritize work to be completed

*Schedule maintenance of all school vehicles

*Transport students at the direction of the Superintendent or Director of Transportation only in the event of a serious accident, natural catastrophe, or other general emergency

Working Conditions:

Exposed to dirt, odor, heights, cleaning chemicals and variable temperatures and weather conditions; requires moderate physical effort to include frequent lifting and moving up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting of 100 pounds; frequent stooping and bending, climbing ladders; and extended periods of standing and walking.
